root password issue in VM

I've downloaded the VM for testing purposes. When I run through the initial configuration of the system, it prompts me for a root password. I enter a password twice, but when I get to the graphical login screen, the password no longer works. I've made a snapshot of my VM before the configuration so I can continuously roll back and try the password configuration again, but each attempt does not work. Please advise.
Thank you,

Any special characters in your root password?

Hi,
I have tried to reproduce your Problem.
But it works for me with out any problem.
Our initial password for root is 'linux123' but this should be over written
by the initial configuration.
Perhaps your password is to long ?
Try to set passwords like
linux123
Test1234
You may change them later to better passwords.
Can you connect and login via ssh ?

my password did have a symbol in it. I had to remove the symbol in order for it to work. I've never experienced that on any Debian installation I've done.
