Getting info about installed packages from host?

Is there a way to get info about installed packages from host itself? From time to time we re-add old (which were deleted) clients or computers are moved from one place to another and get different ids.. Then I start from swaudit and depending on findings I setup (if outdated) or just mark packages as installed.. What are the best practises in these situations?
