Dear opsi users,

before the holiday starts we published some new packages for opsi 4.0 and opsi 4.1 in testing and stable.
Also the Documentation has been updated.

Important news about this release:

* There is a new version of the 'winexe' program which works now also with the newest versions of Windows 10
and may be downloaded from the opsi repository for your opsi-server.

* The new server package 'opsi-script' provides the opsi-script interpreter
for your opsi-server (and other Linux machines) without installing the opsi-linux-client-agent.

JAVA:

According to the upcoming changes of the license for the Oracle JRE many users ask us
How will opsi go on with Java in opsi and what is the future of the 'javavm' packages
in the update subscription for the opsi standard products ?

Java in opsi:

The opsi-configed opsi package comes with a bundled JRE-8 (for 32 Bit Systems)
end a bundled JRE-11 (with HighDPI Support). Both bundled JRE are for Windows.
But the opsi-configed also runs with the free OpenJDK
without problems on Windows and Linux as well.

The use of WebStart with the OpenJDK is problematic and will be not supported in opsi anymore.
So in the next release every link to a opsi-configed WebStart will be removed and replaced by a link
to a setup package for a local installation of the opsi-configed.

* The actual stable jEdit opsi package need still a JRE 1.8.
This package will be updated soon and will be bundled with a matching free JRE-1.8
The product l-jEdit (for Linux) runs on the standard OpenJDK.

A opsi package to install the free Oracle OpenJDK on Windows you will find at
https://download.uib.de/opsi4.1/experim ... 0.1-5.opsi

The future of the 'javavm' packages in the update subscription for the opsi standard products ?:

We will continue to provide you free and maintained Java Runtime Environments:

The most topical 'javavm' package (javavm_1.8.0.191or1.8.0.192-1) will be archived at:
https://download.uib.de/opsi4.1/archive ... 192-1.opsi

* The upcoming javavm packages provided by the 'standard update subscription'
will contain the maintained OpenJDK versions from the following vendors:
* Oracle
* RedHat/IBM (yes - also for Windows)
* SAP

* In addition the 'standard update subscription' will provide a new javavm8 package.
This package should help customers that still need WebStart or Java 1.8 for any application.
This package will contain the maintained JRE 1.8 versions from the following vendors:
* RedHat/IBM (yes - also for Windows)
* Amazon

We plan to publish these packages in the 3. week of 2019.

We hope that one of our packages that will match your needs.
The situation and future around the Java Runtime Environment is not very clear
right now. So we will continue to observe what happens and adjust our subscriptions.

REMINDER:
The support for opsi 4.0 ends with the end of the year 2018.
Please remember upgrading to opsi 4.1 in sufficient time.

For the upcoming festive period we wish you happiness and have a good new year!
